Joint Committee on the National Anti-Corruption Commission

10 December 2025

Parliamentary Joint Committee on the National Anti-Corruption Commission Australian Parliament

00:03 - 02:11
Speaker 6
This public hearing of the parliamentary joint committee on the National Anti Corruption Commission for its its examination of the inspector of the National Anti Corruption Commission's annual report for twenty twenty four twenty five.  I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet and pay my respects to elders past and present.  I extend that respect to any aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples present today.  These are public proceedings being video streamed live via the parliament's website, and a hand side transcript is being made.  Before we begin, a brief word on the role of the committee.

The functions of the committee are set out in section one seven seven of the National Anti Corruption Act 2022.  These include examining the annual reports of the commission and the inspector.  The committee also has a role in relation to reviewing the budget and finances of the commission.  This hearing is also an opportunity for the committee to undertake more general functions under section one seven seven, including monitoring the performance by the commissioner and inspector of their functions and examining trends and changes in corruption among those who are subject to the act.  I remind witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege.

It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt.  It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.  The committee generally prefers evidence to be given in public, but witnesses do have the right to request to be heard in a private session.  If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed.  If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera.

The committee has set 01/20/2026 as the date for responses to any questions that are taken on notice.  I now welcome the inspector of the National Anti Corruption Commission.  I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses giving evidence to senate committees has been provided to you.  For the Hansard record, can you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear today?
