Senate Environment and Communications References Committee Australian Parliament
12:41 - 14:50
Speaker 3
Hansard. Great. Thank you. I declare open this third hearing of the Senate Environment and Communications Reference Committee inquiry into the triple zero service outages. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land in which we meet and pay my respects to their elders past and present.
I extend that respect to any aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today or listening online. These are public proceedings being video streamed via the parliament parliament's website, and a hand side transcript is being made. If there are no objections, we're gonna allow the media to be in the room today. We've done that. I remind, the media that this permission can be revoked at any time, and the media must follow the directions of secretary at Starr.
I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege. It is unlawful it is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as contempt. It is also contempt to give false or misleading evidence. The committee generally prefers evidence to be given in public, but under the senate's resolutions, witnesses have the right to request to be heard in private session. If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer, having regard to the claim, the ground which it...
Of which it is claimed. If the committee determines to insist on an answer, the witness may request that that answer be given in camera. I remind, fellow senators of our obligations under the behavior code of Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness, and respect So we can start, our hearing, today. And just for those, witnesses that we do have, answers to questions on notice, are due by Friday, March 8. Our first witness, for today, is doctor Kerry Schop.
