Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee Australian Parliament
12:44 - 14:47
Speaker 12
Alright. I declare open this public hearing of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee for the Migration Amendment twenty twenty six, measures number one bill twenty twenty six. I'd like to begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the lands in which we meet today, and I pay my respects to their ancestors and elders past and present. I extend this respect to all aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultural and spiritual connections to Australia's lands and waters. On behalf of the committee, I welcome any traditional owners that are here today.
I remind senators of their obligations under the behavior code for Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness, and respect. As chair, I'll be particularly vigilant in ensuring cultural safety for First Nations people and culturally and racially marginalized groups during these proceedings. I remind witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege. It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence to the committee.
The committee prefers to give... To be given evidence in public, but under the senate's resolutions, witnesses have the right to request to be heard in confidence described as being in camera. If you're a witness today and intend to request to get evidence in camera, please bring this to the attention of secretary as soon as possible. If a witness objects to answering a question, the witness should state the ground upon which the objection is taken, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground in which it is claimed. If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera.
Such requests may, of course, also be made any other time. A witness speaking for the first time should state their full name and the capacity in which they appear appear, and witnesses should speak clearly and into the microphones to assist Hansard to record proceedings. I now welcome representatives from the Department of Home Affairs. I thank you for taking time to speak with the committee this afternoon slash this evening, getting into this evening. For the hand side record, could you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear?
