Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Australian Parliament
15:04 - 16:07
Speaker 6
Okay. I declare open this public hearing of the Trade Subcommittee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade for the inquiry into strengthening Australia's trade and investment relations with Africa. I would like to begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we meet today. I would like to pay my respects to elders past and present. I also acknowledge the cultures of any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people present with us today.
This hearing will be broadcast on the Parliament's website and the proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the committee's webpage. I remind members of the media who may be present or listening on the web of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the subcommittee. I now welcome Mr. Gabrielasi Gabrou to give evidence today. For the hand side record, would you please state your name and the capacity in which you appear before the Trade Subcommittee?
16:09 - 16:21
Speaker 3
Thank you. My name is Gabriel Selassie Gabriel. I'm a VACC member, the Victorian African Communities Committee member, but I'm here just representing, myself.
16:22 - 16:50
Speaker 6
Thank you. This hearing is a legal proceeding of the parliament. The giving of false or misleading evidence is a serious matter and may be regarded as a contempt of parliament. The evidence given today will be recorded by Hansard and attracts parliamentary privilege and is being broadcast live. I'll now invite members of the subcommittee to introduce themselves, including those joining us by teleconference today.
