Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee - Darwin, NT (part 1 of 2)

29 April 2026

Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee Australian Parliament

14:56 - 16:31
Speaker 9
This hearing of the senate rule and regional affairs and transport reference inquiry into regional aviation.  I'm the chair, senator Ross Caddell.  I'm joined by senator Richard Colbeck, senator Tony Sheldon, senator Bridget McKenzie, and senator Peter Walsh Lawson.  These are public proceedings being recorded and live video streamed via the parliament's website, and a hands on transcript is being made.  Some witnesses will participate via video conference today.

I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege.  It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt.  It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.  Witnesses also have the right to be heard in camera.  If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the grounds on which their objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer, having regard for the ground in which it is claimed.

If the committee still decides to insist on an answer, a witness may request that that answer be given in camera.  I also remind senators of the obligations under the behavioral code for Australian parliamentary...  Parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness, and respect.  And finally, I remind witnesses who are appearing via video conference, that you are not speaking to mute their microphones, and remember please to unmute when you speak.  I now welcome representatives of CPSU, mister Suwan Adamson and mister Michael Adeyemo.

I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and protection has been given to you.  Correct?  Correct.  And for the Hansard record, will you both please state your full name and capacity in which you appear today?
