Joint Standing Committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme

30 April 2026

Joint Standing Committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme Australian Parliament

10:08 - 12:23
Speaker 9
Morning, everyone.  As the clock has struck 9AM, we'll begin today's hearing.  I would like to declare open this hearing of the joint standing committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme for the committee inquiry into the integrity of the NDIS.  I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet, the Ngunnawal and Nambri people, and pay my respects to their elders past and present.  And I extend that respect to aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.

We will be conducting today's hearing in person and via video conference.  I have, senator Mulholland with me today.  Thank you for joining me.  And, online, I have deputy chair senator Kovacic, miss Berry, mister Pike, and, senator Steelejohn joining us on video conference.  And good morning to you all.

And thank you to to you, Jordan, for getting up a couple of hours early.  Good start for you.  WA does have its beautiful, but it has its challenges.  So these are public hearings, being video streamed live with captions via the parliament's website, and a Hansard transcript is being made.  I remind all witnesses in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege.

It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as contempt.  It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.  Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera.  If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground on which, the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the grounds which is claimed.  If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that an answer is given in camera.
