Joint Standing Committee on Migration Australian Parliament
20:02 - 22:30
Speaker 20
Good morning, everyone, and welcome. Declare sorry, just check with Hansard that we're okay, we are. And we'll start again. Good morning, everyone, welcome to our public hearing in Adelaide. I declare open this public hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration for the inquiry into the value of skilled migration to Australia here in Adelaide.
I welcome all the witnesses appearing before the committee today as well as members of the public and media in the room and watching online. This is a public hearing and this public hearing is a part of a series of hearings the committee is holding for the inquiry and the committee is holding additional hearings in Canberra and Sydney later this month and planning to most major cities around the country and regional areas. Today's hearing is focused on skilled migration in South Australia. This inquiry was given to us by the Minister to conduct in accordance with the parliamentary rules and there's terms of reference and I ask everyone that we try and stick to the terms of reference. And at the end of the inquiry in a few months' time, we will be coming up with recommendations that will be recommended to the Minister's Office.
The way this works is that some of those recommendations may be taken on board, some may they may be taken entirely on board or bits and pieces. So that's the aim of the committee to come up with a good report with the best information possible through your kind evidence and information that you will be giving us. On that note, in accordance with the committee's resolution of the 07/31/2025, this hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website and the proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the parliament's website. Those present are advised that filming and recording by the media is permitted during the hearing. However, we ask that members of the media present or listening report the committee's proceedings fairly and accurately.
We'll now go to the first witnesses and I welcome witnesses from the South Australian Department of State Development to give evidence. And for the Hansard record, would you please state just your names and the capacity in which you appear before the committee?
