Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Australian Parliament
15:05 - 15:49
Speaker 8
I declare open this public hearing of the human rights subcommittee of the Joint Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade in relation to its inquiry into gender equality as a national security and economic security imperative. I acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we meet today, and I pay my respects to elders past and present. This hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website, and the proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the committee's website. I remind members of the media who may be present or listening to the web of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the subcommittee. I now welcome the sex discrimination commissioner, doctor Anna Cody, from the Australian Human Rights Commission to give evidence today.
15:50 - 15:55
Speaker 4
For the Hansard record, would you please state your name and the capacity in which you appear before the human rights subcommittee?
15:55 - 16:02
Speaker 2
Thanks very much, chair. My name's Anna Cody, and I'm the sex discrimination commissioner with the Australian Human Rights Commission.
16:02 - 16:22
Speaker 8
Thank you. Although the subcommittee does not require you to give evidence under oath, I should advise you that this hearing is a legal proceeding of the parliament. The giving of false or misleading evidence is a serious matter and may be regarded as a contempt of parliament. The evidence given today will be recorded by Hansard and attracts parliamentary privilege. I'm Tony Zapier, the chair of the committee.
