Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services Australian Parliament

Speaker 3
Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services into Small Business Insurance. I begin today by acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land on which we meet and I pay my respects to their elders past and present. I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today. The committee will be conducting today's hearing in person and via teleconference. These are public proceedings being audio streamed live via the Parliament's website and a hand side transcript is being made.
I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they're protected by parliamentary privilege. It's unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee and such action may be treated by the Senate as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence. Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera. If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made and the committee will determine whether or insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed.

Speaker 19
If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera. I remind any committee members and witnesses who are appearing via teleconference to mute their microphones when they are not speaking. Just before I welcome our first witness, can I just indicate that in conversations with colleagues and with representations made to our officers, clearly, many people in business are talking to us about concerns about the insurance sector, access to insurance and the price of insurance? It is my sincere hope that the inquiry of this committee will outline the shape and form of the challenges that face Australian businesses and Australians in general with regard to access to and the quality of insurance and the pricing of insurance and that we might find amongst those who give us evidence sustainable solutions to the very real challenges that we face as a nation. So with those words, can I now welcome Mr Damian Rinaldi from the Australian Music Publishers Association?
