Joint Standing Committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme Australian Parliament
16:42 - 19:13
Speaker 5
Open the committee hearing. But, firstly, I just would like to put in an apology for, the chair, miss Coker, and the deputy chair, senator Kovacic. They will be here shortly, but they've just been held up at the airport, so they won't be too far away. I declare open this hearing of the joint standing committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme for the committee's inquiry into the integrity of the NDIS. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians on the land on which we meet, the Gladagille people, and pay my respects to their elders past and present.
I extend that respect to aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today. We will be conducting today's hearing in person and via video conference. These are public proceedings being video streamed live with captions via the parliament's website, and a hand saned transcript is being made. I welcome you all here today. I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege.
It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence. Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera. If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed. If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera.
Could I please remind those providing evidence today that you should not divulge confidential, personal, or identifying information when you speak? If you wish to supplement your evidence with with written information, please forward it to the secretariat after this hearing. The committee has taken steps to ensure today's hearing is accessible and is using parliament's new interface video conferencing facilities to broadcast its proceedings. Any disruption to today's hearing from observers may prevent witnesses from giving their evidence to the committee and may negatively impact on the broadcast. Members of the public in the audience are therefore reminded to observe the committee's proceedings in silence.
