Joint Select Committee on Northern Australia Australian Parliament
10:39 - 12:58
Speaker 10
I declare open that this hearing of the joint standing committee on Northern Australia. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet, the Ngunnawal and Nambri people of Ngunnawal country, and pay my respects to their elders past and present. The committee will be conducting today's hearing in person and by video conference. Committee members attending are here in the room, myself, Marion Scrimjaw is the chair, the honorable Melissa Price as deputy chair, mister Gosling, member for Solomon, and senator MacDonald who will join us soon, and my colleague, senator Ellie Whitaker. There are public proceedings being video streamed live by the parliament's website, and a hand side transcript is being made.
I remind witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, are protected by parliamentary privilege. It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated as condemned. It is a contempt to give false or misleading evidence, but witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera. If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will assist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed. The committee determines to insist on an answer.
A witness may request that the answer be given in camera. That's a whole mouthful, but Mhmm. We will work with it, mister Day. I also remind witnesses who are appearing by video conference and who are not speaking to mute their microphones. And I welcome, representatives from MEGT Australia Limited and Engineers Australia.
I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses and giving evidence to the committee has been provided to you. For the Hanzad record, will you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear today?
