Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Australian Parliament

11:37 - 12:48
Speaker 2
Well, good morning all.  It being 09:00, I declare open this public hearing of the human rights subcommittee of the joint standing committee on foreign affairs, defense, and trade in relation to its inquiry into gender equality as a national security and economic security imperative.  I begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we meet, and I pay my respects to elders past and present.  This hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website, and the proof and official transcripts of proceedings will be published on the committee's website.  I remind members of the media who may be present or listening on the web of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the subcommittee.

I I now welcome representatives from Human Rights Watch and the Australian Red Cross to give evidence today.  For the hand side record, would you please state your names and the capacity in which you appear before the human rights subcommittee?  So don't know who wants to go first, but I can see you on the screen.  And, if someone would like to kick off, and then we'll get into the formal part of the of the hearing.
