Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services Australian Parliament
13:39 - 15:30
Speaker 18
Thank you very, very much. I declare open this hearing of the parliamentary joint committee on corporations and financial services into the oversight of ASIC, the takeovers panel, and the corporation's legislation. I begin today by acknowledging the Ngunnawal and Nambri people, the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet, and I pay my respects to their elders past and present. I extend that respect to aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today. The committee will be conducting today's hearing in person and via video...
Via teleconference. These are public proceedings being streamed live via parliament's website, and a handset transcript is being made. I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they're protected by parliamentary privilege. It's unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.
Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera. If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed. If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request the answer be given in camera. I remind any committee members and witnesses who are appearing via video conference to mute their microphones when they are not speaking. I also want to note for the public record that it is the last occasion on which this committee will oversight ASIC under its current leadership, chair mister Joseph Longo, who has served at a very, very high level in our country with distinction and with great care and very responsive to the requests of this committee.

Speaker 11
I would have to say that in the time that you've been sharing, the briefs that we've received and the level of communication, has really escalated, and that allows us to do a better job in terms of putting a perspective to you from the Australian public when you appear before us. So on behalf of the committee and others, can I sincerely thank you, mister Longo, for your service of the public good? And I now invite you to make a slightly longer than usual closing statement.
