Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee Australian Parliament

14:55 - 15:59
Speaker 20
I declare open this public hearing of the legal and constitutional affairs legislation committee inquiry into the secrecy provisions and measures repealing offenses bill twenty twenty six.  I'd like to begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the lands on which we meet today, and I pay my respects to their ancestors and elders past and present.  I extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultural and spiritual spiritual connections to Australia's lands and waters.

For people participating remotely, I'm I'm sure that you can see everybody in the room, but I'm the chair, senator Jana Stewart.

I'm joined by the deputy chair, senator Leah Bry...

Blythe, and also senator McKaylee Black.  Thank you.  And at different points through the day, we'll also be joined by senator David Shuberge.  I remind senators of their obligations under the behavior code for Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness, and respect.  As chair, I'll be particularly vigilant in ensuring cultural safety for First Nations people and help culturally and racially marginalized groups during these proceedings.
