Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee Australian Parliament
11:28 - 13:33
Speaker 21
Good morning, everybody. I declare open this hearing of the Senate Community Affairs legislation committee's inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme amendment securing the NDIS for future generations bill twenty twenty six. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet and pay my respects to their elders past, present, and emerging and extend that respect to any aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples joining us today. The committee will be conducted today, in person and also via video conference. And I'm senator Karen Grogan, and I'm chairing the committee.
And with me are senators Askew, DeLiga, Little, and Steelejohn. And online, we have senator Ananda Raja. These are public proceedings being audio streamed live via the parliament's web... Website, and a hand sized transcript is being made. I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege.
It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated by the senate as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence, and witnesses also have the right to a request to be heard in camera. If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the grounds upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer, having regard to the grounds on which it's claimed. If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request the answer be given in camera. I remind senators their obligation under the behavior code of Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, and respect.
And I remind committee members and witnesses who are appearing via video conference, and who are not speaking to mute their microphones. I would like to welcome the disability discrimination commissioner who I believe we have online. Is that correct? Yes. Thank you for appearing before the committee today.
