Joint Select Committee on Northern Australia Australian Parliament
21:24 - 21:32
Speaker 94
So we're right to go? Yeah. Okay. I apologize for the time we're what? Ten minutes late.
21:32 - 23:25
Speaker 1
But I declare open this hearing of the joint standing committee on Northern Australia. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet, all of the the owners that Gurr... Goomach, Rurachingu, Gulpu, and all Yongle peoples of these lands, and pay my respects to their elders past and present. I extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people here today. The committee will be conducting today's hearing in person.
Committee members attending in the room, myself, Marion Scrumjo as the chair, the honorable Melissa Price as deputy chair, senator Allman Payne, and mister Luke Gosling, MP member for Solomon. These are public proceedings being audio streamed live by the parliament's website, and a Hansard transcript is being made. I remind witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they are protected by parliamentary privilege. It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.
Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera. If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer. Having regard to the ground in which is claimed, if the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera. And I now welcome representatives from Rio Tinto, miss Julia Wilkins and miss Shannon Price. And I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses giving evidence to the committees has been provided to you.
