Senate Economics Legislation Committee - Sydney, NSW (part 1 of 2)

15 June 2026

Senate Economics Legislation Committee Australian Parliament

15:09 - 17:16
Speaker 16
Hearing of the Senate Economics Legislation Committee inquiry into the Treasury Laws Amendment Tax Reform No.  One Bill twenty twenty six and Income Tax Rates Amendment Tax Reform one Bill twenty twenty six.  I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet and pay my respects to the elders past and present, and I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.  The committee will be conducting today's hearings in person and via teleconference.  I'm senator Lisa Darmanen, and I am joined today by the deputy chair, senator Little and senators Walker, Chandler, Dean Smith, senator Andrew Bragg, O'Neill, and McKim, who will also be joining us.

These are public proceedings being audio broadcast live via the parliament's website, and a hand saned transcript is being made available.  If there are no objections, the committee authorizes media reporting and photography of the committee's proceedings in accordance with senate resolution three.  I remind the media that this permission can be revoked at any time, and the media must follow the direction of secretariat staff.  I remind all witnesses presenting in Australia that in giving evidence to the committee, are protected by parliamentary privilege.  It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, such action may be treated by the Senate as a contempt.

It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.  Witnesses also have a right to request to be heard in camera.  If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground upon which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed.  If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera.  I remind senators of their obligations under the behavior code for Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness, and respect.

I remind community members and witnesses who are appearing via teleconference and who are not speaking to mute their microphones.  So I now welcome representatives from the Institute of Public Accountants and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.  I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses giving evidence to senate committees has been provided to you.  For the hand side record, will you please state your full names and the capacity in which you will appear today?  And I will start on my left.
