Senate Select Committee on Intergenerational Housing Inequity - Adelaide, SA (part 1 of 2)

16 June 2026

Senate Select Committee on Intergenerational Housing Inequity Australian Parliament

17:03 - 18:46
Speaker 14
Well, thanks everybody.  I declare open this hearing of the Senate Select Committee on Intergenerational Housing Equity.  I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet, the Kaurna people, and pay my respects to their elders past and present.  And I extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people here today.  The committee will be conducting today's hearing in person and remotely.

Committee members participating today include myself, as chair, Senator Brown, deputy chair, and Senator Mulholland.  These are public proceedings, being video streamed live via the parliament's website, and a hand side transcript is being made.  I remind witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee, they're protected by parliamentary privilege.  It's unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee, and such action may be treated as a contempt.  It's also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence.

Witnesses also have a right to request, to be heard in camera.  If a witness objects to an answering a question, they should state the ground on which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist on an answer having regard to the ground which is claimed.  If the committee determines to insist on an answer, a witness may request that the answer be given in camera.  Also, I remind witnesses who are appearing via video conference who...  And who are not speaking to mute their microphones.

So we begin this morning, with the Anti Poverty Network SA and SA Unions.  And I welcome representatives from those two organizations in person.  Thanks for being here in person.  I understand the information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses giving evidence to committees has been provided to you.  Yep.
