Being 9AM, I declare this public hearing of the joint standing committee on trade and investment growth open for its inquiry into creating sustainable economic growth in rural and regional Australia.  Today, the committee is meeting in Adelaide, South Australia.  I'd like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land from which we meet today and pay my respects to their ancestors and elders past, present and emerging.  I extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultural and spiritual connections to Australia's land and waters.  In accordance with the committee's resolution of the 08/27/2025, this hearing will be audio broadcast on the Parliament's website and the proof and official transcripts of proceeding will be published on the inquiry website.

I remind members of the media who may be here of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the committee.  I'll start today by introducing myself.  I'm the Deputy Chair, Mr.  Rick Goulson, who is standing in for the Chair, senator Mariel Smith of South Australia, who I'm sure you all know, who's, unfortunately, incapacitated at the moment.  I'll now invite other committee members, starting on my left, to introduce themselves.
