Joint Standing Committee on Treaties Australian Parliament
20:04 - 21:16
Speaker 1
Open this public hearing on the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties for its inquiry into the treaty between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia on common security, also known as the Jakarta treaty. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians on the land on which we meet today and pay my respects to elders both past and present. Also, extend that respect to any aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who might be joining us today. In accordance with the committee's resolution, 07/31/2025, this hearing will be broadcast, and proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the parliament's website. I remind all present as the chair, I will ensure the proceedings are conducted in an orderly and respectful way.
I remind all members of the media the need for fair and accurate reporting of the proceedings of the committee. I'd like to call our witnesses for today's hearing. I now welcome representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Defense to give evidence today. For the hand side record, would you please state your name and the capacity in which you are appearing before the committee?
