Speaker 1
Committee on foreign affairs, defense, and trade for the inquiry into strengthening Australia's trade and investment relations with Africa.  I would like to begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we meet today.  I would like to pay my respects to elders past and present.  I also acknowledge the cultures of any aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people present with us today.  This hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website, and the proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the committee's web page.

I remind members of the media who may be present or listening on the web of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the subcommittee.  I now welcome professor Minnie Watts to give evidence today.  For the hands on record, would you please state your name and the capacity in which you appear before the trade subcommittee?
