House Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water Australian Parliament

Speaker 3
We're pretty lucky.  I mean, you can't go anywhere.  Good to go?  Okay, well then we will declare open this public hearing of the Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water for its inquiry into solar panel reuse and recycling.  I'm Anne Urquhart, I'm the chair of the committee.

We also have with us today Ms Zali Steggall, who's the deputy chair, Carol Berry MP, Mr Colin Boyce MP, who we're still not sure whether Mr Boyce is going to get here, but hopefully he'll make it, Ms Alison Byrnes MP, Mr Tom French MP, and Mr Simon Kennedy MP will join us a little later.  I acknowledge that where we meet today has been the meeting place for the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people for thousands of years.  For those viewing proceedings remotely, I also acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands that they are on.  I pay my respects to ancestors past, present and emerging, and acknowledge the cultures of any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people present with us today.  In accordance with the committee's resolution, this hearing will be broadcast on the parliament's website and the proof and official transcript of proceedings will also be published on the parliament's website.

I remind all that present that as chair, I will ensure that proceedings are conducted in an orderly, respectful and courteous way.  Those present here today are advised that filming and recording are permitted during the hearing.  I remind members of the media who may be present or listening on the web of the need to fairly and accurately report the proceedings of the committee.  And I now welcome Professor Andrew Blakers to give evidence.  For the Hansard record, would you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear before the committee?

My name is Andrew Blakers, I'm a professor of engineering at the Australian National University, however I appear as a private person.
