Senate Select Committee on Intergenerational Housing Inequity Australian Parliament

Speaker 2
As a big picture, you know, let's, let's aspire for that as a country and, and that certainly backs up our colleagues across the country as part of the UnitingCare Australia network.  Yes.  To achieve that it requires a stepping out of a three-yearly electoral cycle and it requires a commitment across community at federal, state and local level to deliver it and to hold strong to achievement of a target.  I don't see that on in the federal sphere at the moment.  We've just heard the, if I understand correctly, I often read the headlines very sketchily, but I think the Liberal Party have said they would do away with the HAFF, for example, which is, you know, one offering in this space, not enough as we've heard evidence on.

What's your feeling then about the intersection of this big problem with a political cycle and a split responsibility across government?

Speaker 3
They don't correlate.  So if Australia wants to get themselves out of this challenge, we have to think long term.  And the current political cycle does not enable that.  So it requires bravery on behalf of our politicians to step outside what they know of in their current term and think beyond.  And I think that, that is a challenge for any government regardless whether it's federal or state.

But that's what's required.
