Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Australian Parliament
16:34 - 17:58
Speaker 8
I open this public hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs for the inquiry into racism, hate and violence towards First Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. I acknowledge the traditional custodians on the lands on which we meet today. And I pay my respects to their ancestors and their elders past and present. I extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in their cultural and spiritual connections to Australia's lands and waters. In accordance with the committee's resolution of 6 August 2025, this hearing will be broadcast on the Parliament's website and the proof and official transcripts of proceedings will be published on the inquiry website.
Any answers to questions taken on notice at this public hearing will also be published on the inquiry's website. I remind members of the media who may be present or listening in online of the need to fairly and accurately report proceedings of the committee. I now call on representatives from the Tasmanian Regional Aboriginal Communities Alliance, TRACA, and First Peoples Tasmania Aboriginal Corporation via teleconference. For the Hansard record, would you please state your full names and the capacity in which you appear and I might start in the room and then I'll come online to you, Mr. Roe.
17:58 - 18:07
Speaker 4
So Nicholas Joseph Cameron, I'm the chair of TRACA and I'm also the CEO of Melythina Tiakana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation.
