Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee - Perth, WA (part 2 of 2)

6 August 2026

Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee Australian Parliament

16:46 - 19:13
Speaker 4
Recommence.  Good afternoon.  Thank you to all of the witnesses who have made time to appear before us today.  We really appreciate your time and for shortly sharing your perspectives with us.  I will just let everybody know that in addition to the video conferencing that is broadcasting this hearing, there are some other cameras in the room.

If anyone has any concerns about that, please tell us.  And you can absolutely tell us, there's no problems if anyone would prefer not to have their photos or videos taken.  We're all good?  Okay, excellent.  So this session is an opportunity for the committee to hear from members of the community about their lived experiences.

I remind the committee that this session is primarily a listening exercise.  I would like to remind everyone that this is a public hearing and these are formal proceedings of the Senate, and the hearing must be conducted in an orderly and respectful manner.  I remind witnesses not to disclose any personal or private information, such as your full name, date of birth, address, etc., during your statement, as the audio of the hearing is being broadcast live.  Today we also have representatives in the room from the NDIA who are able to help with any concerns you may have, and so please approach the secretariat if you would like to hear from those representatives after your appearance.  I am Ellie Whitaker, I'm the chair of the committee and also a Western Australian senator.

In the room I'm joined by Senator Steele-John, who is also of course a Western Australian senator.  We are joined online by Senator Antic, Senator Darmanin, and Senator Ananda-Rajah.  I now welcome Haley, Mia, Tracy, Robin, Lee, and Joshua.  Thank you for appearing before the committee today.  I will ask each of you to please state your first name only for the benefit of the Hansard transcript.
