Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Australian Parliament
16:56 - 17:58
Speaker 8
I declare open this public hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs for the inquiry into racism, hate and violence towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which we meet today and pay my respects to their ancestors and their elders past and present. I extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultural and spiritual connections to Australia's lands and waters. In accordance with the committee's resolution of 6 August 2025, this hearing will be broadcast on the Parliament's website and the proof and official transcripts of proceedings will be published on the inquiry website. Any answers to questions taken on notice at this public hearing will also be published on the committee's website.
I remind members of the media who may be present or listening online of the need to fairly and accurately report proceedings of the committee. I now call on representatives from Gullan Wale to give evidence. For the Hansard record, would you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear.
17:58 - 18:03
Speaker 1
Hi, I'm Jan-Murray Jackson and I'm the Dja Dja Wurrung reserved seat holder and the co-chair of Gullan Wale.
18:03 - 18:39
Speaker 6
Thank you. Although the committee does not require you to give evidence under oath, I should advise you that this hearing is a legal proceeding of the Parliament and therefore has the same standing as proceedings of the respective houses. The giving of false or misleading evidence is a serious matter and may be regarded as contempt of Parliament. The evidence given today will be recorded by Hansard and attracts parliamentary privilege and as I flagged, will be broadcast live on the Parliament's website. I remind members in the gallery that you do need the consent of the committee and witnesses at the table before taking photos or filming.
