Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee (part 1 of 2)

13 August 2026

Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee Australian Parliament

11:40 - 12:31
Speaker 1
If a witness objects to answering a question, they should state the ground on which the objection is made, and the committee will determine whether it will insist upon an answer, having regard to the ground on which it is claimed.  If the committee determines it to insist on an answer, a witness may request that that answer be given in camera.  I also remind senators of their obligations under the behavioral code of conduct for Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness and respect.  Finally, I remind committee members and witnesses who are appearing remotely, if there's anyone there, to mute your microphone when you're not speaking and remember to unmute.  I've failed that myself for a number of times, so we won't hold you to the strong penalties on that.

I now welcome Dr. Stephen Gourley from the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.  I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and giving evidence to committees has been provided to you.  For the Hansard record, will you please state your full name and capacity in which you appear today.
12:31 - 12:38
Speaker 3
My name is Dr. Stephen William Gourley.  I am the immediate past president of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.
