Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services Australian Parliament

01:31 - 02:44
Speaker 11
I now welcome representatives from KPMG Australia, Office of General Counsel, Allens, Ashurst, and the Law Society of New South Wales.  I understand that information on parliamentary privilege and the protection of witnesses giving evidence to Senate committees has been provided to each of you.  But I do want to stress that in the giving of false or misleading evidence may be treated by the Senate as a contempt.  And I expect you know better than many of our witnesses how serious that matter would be.  The committee also reminds all parties to this matter of the committee's commitment to Parliament's procedures for the protection of witnesses.

Committee emphasizes that witnesses are protected by parliamentary privilege making it unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee.  Any such action taken against a witness may be treated by the Parliament as a contempt, and the committee will ensure that any such action is vigorously investigated and if necessary referred to the Senate as a potential contempt.  For the Hansard record, I'll ask each of you to state your full name and the capacity in which you appear, and we'll start with you, Mr. Miller.
