Joint Standing Committee on Migration Australian Parliament

20:12 - 21:58
Speaker 5
I declare open this public hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration for the inquiry into the value of skilled migration to Australia in Brisbane.  I welcome all the witnesses who are appearing before the committee today, as well as members of the public and media in the room and people watching online or listening online.  This is the seventh public hearing that we're conducting for the inquiry.  The committee's conducted public hearings in Canberra, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, and anticipates holding additional hearings in the coming months.  The inquiry, as you would know, the scope of the inquiry is looking into skilled migration, the benefits, the negatives, what can be done better, what's working, what's not working, and we're here to hear from all the witnesses so we can come up with the correct and most concise recommendations that will be given to the Minister.

On that note, in accordance with the committee's resolution of the 31st of July 2025, the audio of this hearing will be broadcast on the Parliament's website and the proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the Parliament's website.  Those present are advised that filming and recording by the media is permitted during the hearing, however, we ask that members of the media present or listening report the committee's proceedings fairly and accurately.  I'll now welcome Ms. King from the Queensland Council of Unions to give evidence today, but before I do that, I'm going to ask my colleagues to introduce themselves.  I'll start off with myself, Steve Georganas, the federal member for Adelaide and chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration.
