Joint Standing Committee on Migration Australian Parliament
18:30 - 20:29
Speaker 3
Excellent. I declare open this public hearing of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration for the inquiry into the value of skilled migration to Australia on the Gold Coast. I welcome all the witnesses appearing before the committee today, as well as members of the public and media, whether they be in the room or watching online or listening online. This is the eighth public hearing for the inquiry. The committee has conducted public hearings in Canberra, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, and anticipates holding additional hearings in the coming months.
The inquiry, the inquiry is to do with skilled migration. So the parameters of the inquiry are to look at how we're conducting skilled migration, where the issues are, what we can do better, what we can change. What we're, our job here as a committee is to come up with recommendations that we'll be put to the minister, then it's up to the minister what happens with those recommendations.
So the parameters are skilled migration, where the needs are, whether we've got too much skilled migration, whether we haven't got enough skilled migration, and where we could be doing it better and where changes could be made. But in accordance with the committee's resolution of the 31st of July 2025, the audio of this hearing will be broadcast on the Parliament's website, and the proof and official transcripts of the proceedings will be published on the Parliament's website. Those present are advised that filming and recording by the media is permitted during the hearing. However, we ask that members of the media present or listening report the committee's proceedings fairly and accurately. That takes us to item number one.
And I now welcome Ms. Keenan from the Gold Coast Regional Jobs Committee to give evidence today. For the Hansard record, would you please state your name and capacity in which you appear before the committee.
