House Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs Australian Parliament

17:06 - 18:24
Speaker 13
Thank you everyone.  I now declare open the public hearing of the Standing Committee of Social Policy and Legal Affairs for the inquiry into the relationship between domestic, family and sexual violence and suicide.  I'd like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the country on which we meet, in our various places around the country, and pay our respects to ancestors and elders past, present and emerging.  I extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultural, spiritual and religious connections to Australia's lands and waters.  This hearing will be broadcast and the transcript of proceedings will be published on the Parliament's website.

For those in person or listening online, please be advised that this hearing may contain evidence that could cause distress.  If anything you hear today upsets you or causes distress, please reach out to 1800RESPECT, Lifeline, 13YARN, Kids Helpline or other support services.  There is also a Parliamentary Workplace Support Service and Employee Assistance Program for broadcasting Hansard, the committee secretariat, the committee and its members' staff.  I now welcome Diverse Voices to give evidence.  For the Hansard record, would you please state your full name and the capacity in which you appear before the committee?
18:24 - 18:32
Speaker 6
Good morning, my name is Teagan Jeffreys and I'm the Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Programs Manager at Diverse Voices in Queensland.

Thank you very much.  Although you're not required to give evidence under oath, this hearing is a legal proceeding of the Parliament, it has the same standing as proceedings of the House.  The giving of false or misleading evidence is a serious matter and may be regarded as contempt of Parliament.  The evidence given today will be recorded by Hansard and attracts parliamentary privilege.  We'll perhaps just do a quick introduction before we go around.
