Senate Environment and Communications References Committee Australian Parliament
47:11 - 49:17
Speaker 6
Great. Okay. I will declare open this hearing of the Senate Environment and Communications References Committee's inquiry into the Australia Post retail network. I begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet and pay my respects to their elders past and present, and I extend that respect to any Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people here today. These are public proceedings being audio streamed via the Parliament's website and a Hansard transcript is being made.
If there's of course if there's media who wish to come we'll have no objections to them following the the usual rules. I remind all witnesses that in giving evidence to the committee they are protected by parliamentary privilege. It is unlawful for anyone to threaten or disadvantage a witness on account of evidence given to a committee and any such action may be treated by the Senate as a contempt. It is also a contempt to give false or misleading evidence. The committee generally prefers evidence to be given in public but of course we have resolutions that allow witnesses to be heard in a private session.
If a witness objects to answering a question they should state the ground upon which the objection is made and the committee will determine whether we will insist on an answer having regard to the ground upon which it is claimed. If the committee determines to insist on an answer a witness may respect the answer be given in camera. I remind all senators of our obligations under the behavior code of Australian parliamentarians to treat witnesses with dignity, courtesy, fairness and respect. Answers to questions on notice will be Wednesday. Well that's wrong because that's.
We will come up with our date for answers on notice. It'll be some two weeks from here let's say whatever that date is. Thank you. Now could I get you both to introduce yourselves give us your full names and the capacity in which you're appearing.
