House of Representatives Australian Parliament
09:51 - 10:04
Speaker 2
Honourable members, the Speaker.
10:04 - 11:39
Speaker 3
I acknowledge the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples who are the traditional custodians of the Canberra area and pay respects to the elders past and present of all Australia's indigenous peoples. Almighty God, we humbly beseech thee to vouchsafe thy blessing upon this Parliament. Direct and prosper our deliberations to the advancement of thy glory and the true welfare of the people of Australia. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Just before I call the Leader of the House, I just have a short statement to make to the House. Members, today is International Day of Democracy. It's an opportunity to reflect on the state of democracy around the world and here at home in Australia.
We are the 10th oldest democracy in the world, and this year we commemorate 125 years of Federation and our Parliament. An incredible feat. As Australians, we have much to celebrate as a nation, with a proud history of democratic innovation. We are the best country on earth. As people elected to represent our communities here in the Federal Parliament, we have a responsibility to safeguard our democracy, to ensure Australians have the knowledge, skills, and access to reliable information to participate in the decisions that affect their lives.
