Order, order. Welcome to the Public Accounts Committee on Thursday, 03/26/2026. Before I start, I want to be clear that what has happened with transfer and the early administration of the civil service pension scheme by capita is unacceptable. Notwithstanding this, you are appearing here today as you did on the February 12, and we thank you very much for that. It has not been difficult to secure your appearance.
You've been forthcoming and some of you some of your information we've requested from you and you are facing up to your responsibilities so we thank you for that that having been said you would expect our scrutiny will be robust and challenging but fair today we must remember that the cabinet and my CSP, respectively, are also responsible for the scheme and the state that it is currently in. Last month, we heard evidence from you both about the ongoing issues with the scheme. You told us that the previous administrator, my CSP, had left you with a large backlog of outstanding work, the size and complexity of which was unexpected and the main reason for sailing for service failings. We've also learned through correspondence that hardship loans have been arranged to support civil servants who have been left in financial difficulty as a result of failings in the administration of the scheme. So today we'll be looking further to determine what action you are taking to address the issues of retiring civil servants who have been experiencing problems in accessing their pensions.
Many of these scheme members have been left struggling to make ends meet, causing them difficult ongoing stress and anxiety. I would like to sincerely thank every individual who's taken the time to write to this committee on this issue, that it has greatly helped our scrutiny of the whole matter. Whilst we cannot assist with individual cases, our committee is committed to the ongoing scrutiny of this failing contract. And today we hope to get further answers from you both about what is being done to put things right. So without any further ado, Richard would you like to please just introduce yourself and then Chris Clements to do the same please.
