Speaker 1
Welcome to the Select Committee on Science and Technology. We are undertaking an inquiry into innovation in the NHS, personalised medicines and and AI. We are very pleased to have as our witness for this first session Professor Florian Markowitz who is Associate Director of Artificial Intelligence for Cancer Research UK. Professor Markowitz is coming in online from Germany this morning. So Professor Markowitz, thank you very much for joining this morning.
By way of an opening statement, could you give us a brief overview of your research? Your group's stated mission is technologies for doctors to make better decisions faster, especially in oncology using genomic and AI approaches. Could you set out for us please where AI in cancer genomics is already making a difference to patients? And how close are we to this sort of thing being routinely used in the in the NHS? So we're very keen to hear your your answers to those.
But but please, over to you to make your opening statement.

Thank you very much. I'm afraid I would have to say we're not very close at all. There is a huge gap between academic innovations, lots of approaches, lots of very good ideas where we have prototypes, and we have tried them out on academic data sets. But getting that into routine patient treatment, we are very far from that. And there are many reasons.
