Speaker 1
Welcome to the Public Accounts Committee on Thursday, 06/04/2026. Today is the second installment of our compensation week in which we are examining the government's administration of compensation schemes. On Monday, we heard incredibly powerful testimony from expert witnesses on four of the government's compensation schemes. I'm sure you've watched our session and, like us, found some of what they had to say very difficult to hear. What some of these people who have used these schemes have gone through is unacceptable.
And I would like us to bear in mind those people today when we're talking about what will seem colder and more distant concerns of value for money, scheme designs and the working of inner government. But, of course, this is all about people who have suffered. So today, we are joined by very senior officials from a variety of government departments in arms and legs bodies, each of which have been responsible for administering at least one of the seven compensation schemes that the NAO examined as part of their report on this subject. We'll be looking to challenge the departments about their administration of these schemes and to examine the reasons why the experience of making a claim has varied substantially for affected individuals seeking fair address from the schemes. We will also be exploring whether the schemes are doing enough to ensure potential claimants apply and their needs are met during the claims process and examining how government plans to apply lessons learned from the schemes to future schemes across government.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank every individual who has engaged with the committee via our survey. It's been incredibly valuable for us to hear from people about their lived experience of applying for compensation schemes. So we are extremely grateful to all of those who took the time to complete this survey. So without any further ado, I think, Kat, you have Good morning everybody. Let let everybody introduce themselves, starting with you, Kat Little, please.
Just who you are and how long you've been in in in post would be helpful.
