Here it goes. I beg to move that the committee has considered the animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986 amendment regulations 2026. It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, mister Twiggy. Following EU exit, the government has been reviewing retained EU law to ensure that it functions clearly and effectively within The UK's domestic framework. The draft regulations before the committee ensure that The UK's high standards for the use of animals in scientific research continue to operate clearly and effectively in domestic law.
They relayed on the 03/25/2026 using powers under the retained EU law revocation and reform act 2023. The regulations make technical amendments to retained EU legislation relating to the use of animals in scientific procedures. They preserve existing animal protection safeguards, the responsibilities, and the enforcement powers within a clear UK framework and they assure transparency of operation. They do not create new permissions for animal testing nor do they reduce the rigorous standards that establishments and individuals licensed to use animals for scientific purposes must meet. The UK operates one of the most robust regulatory systems in the world founded on the Animal Scientific Procedures Act 1986.
