Welcome to today's session of the Science Innovation and Technology Select Committee on the Science and regulation of hair and beauty products and treatments. Now hair and beauty is a major industry and one providing income to many female entrepreneurs. However, the chemicals used can be powerful and even toxic, so it is important that their use is properly regulated and enforced. Now back in 2013, the Kio review concluded that existing regulation of the sector had not kept pace with a rapidly expanding industry and that particularly non surgical procedures were almost entirely unregulated kept despite their risks. In our first evidence session, the committee heard powerful evidence including from a witness with experience of harm from a beauty treatment.
And so today, we'll be hearing from two panels of witnesses to see how effectively beauty treatments beauty products and nonsurgical cosmetic treatments are overseen by professional associations, regulators, and governments. For our first panel of witnesses, we'll hear about the current frameworks for regulation and enforcement and views on proposed reform. So I'm very pleased to welcome this morning our witnesses who represent trading standards, environmental health, and a self regulated body for nonsurgical aesthetic sector. I am going to ask Samantha to put the first question to the committee and I'm going to suggest that as you answer so first question to our panel. As you answer, you first introduce yourselves and your organization.
