Okay, good afternoon everyone and welcome to this press conference following the EU-Montenegro Intergovernmental Conference. We're joined by our Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne, Prime Minister of Montenegro, Milojko Spajić, and the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi. I will first give the floor to Minister Byrne.

Thanks very much. It was an absolute pleasure to chair the 28th Accession Conference with Montenegro. The momentum of Montenegro moves ahead. Super Tuesday moves on. We're halfway through Super Tuesday now, and indeed Montenegro is more than halfway through their accession process of closing negotiating chapters.

And we will continue to advance Montenegro's accession process. The Council formally confirmed today that Montenegro is ready to close two additional chapters: Chapter 8 on Competition Policy and Chapter 29 on the Customs Union. Montenegro has now closed 18 negotiating chapters.

This means that Montenegro, as I said, has closed more than half of the negotiating chapters. This is an important milestone not only for Montenegro, not only for the European Union, but for every citizen outside the European Union in an accession country who seeks for their country to join the European Union, because we are demonstrating that we are preparing the ground for the accession of a new member state and that there is reality to that. We demonstrate that we're serious about enlargement and that the European Union and its member states keep their promises. Today's accession conference also confirms Montenegro's strong commitment to our European Union. Montenegro has made huge efforts across all sectors of government to meet the necessary criteria for entry to the European Union.
