00:01 - 03:11
Speaker 1
Two, one.  Can I welcome everyone to this public session of the Domestic Abuse Act review that is being conducted by this House of Lords select committee?  And and can I welcome a number of witnesses who are going to attend today to give us the benefit of their expertise?  Now, this is is what's called post legislative scrutiny.  We're looking at a piece of legislation that was introduced in 2021.

It was the Domestic Abuse Act, and it was to really deal with the prevalence and the challenges there are to the legal system around dealing effectively and justly with domestic abuse.  And a lot of new learning went into the creation of that piece of legislation.  And what we're looking at is how effective it has been and what has been the impact, and are there any gaps that need to be filled.  So can I start by introducing our panel?  We have with us today, doctor Mohammad Mazar Idris, known as doctor Maz.

He's a senior lecturer in law at Manchester Metropolitan University, and he his research focuses on honor abuse and forced marriage and how this affects male victims because men can be at the the the receiving end of this kind of abusive behavior within families and communities too.  And and so we we know that by and large, when it comes to domestic abuse, numerically, it falls on the shoulders of women far more than men, but we know that there are male victims too.  And so it'd be very interesting to hear from you, doctor Maz, about all of that.  And and you've published a number of books about men and masculinities and honor based abuse and the whole issue of how that affects the the Islamic community.  We also have with us in in body and soul, doctor Hernanah Siddiqui, who is the director of policy campaigns and research at Southall Black Sisters, a long standing organization founded in 1979, a charity that provides advocacy, legal support, and national campaigning grounded in an understanding of the experiences of the black migrant and other ethnic minority communities.

And so thank you for coming doctor Siddiqui and for bringing your expertise to this session.  And we also have doctor Gada Alnasseri Alnasseri who's the executive director of IMCAN.  Again, two decades of expertise in domestic abuse, forced marriage, and honor based violence.  IMCAN is The UK's only nationally led black and minoritized feminist umbrella organization dedicated to addressing violence against BAME.  I hate that expression personally, but women and girls.
