Speaker 2
Is it the wish of the committee that the instruments be debated together?  I will now call the minister to move the first motion and speak to both instruments.  At the end of the debate, we will put the question on the first motion and then ask the minister to move the second motion forward.  I call the minister to move.
00:27 - 01:42
Speaker 3
The first motion.  Thank you, Mr. Vickers.  It's a pleasure to serve with you in the chair.  I beg to move that the committee consider both the hazards in social housing prescribed requirements England's regulations 2025, otherwise known as AWAB's law, and the electrical safety standards in the Private Rented Sector England amendment extension to the Social Rented Sector Regulations 2025.  Alongside our commitment to delivering the biggest increase in social and affordable house building in a generation, the government is determined to drive a transformational and lasting change in the safety and quality of social housing.

By ensuring that tenants can feel safe in their homes and giving social landlords clarity about their responsibilities, these regulations are a vital part of that effort.  I'll take each of the regulations in turn, starting with Ahab's law.  As the committee will know, Ishaq was just 2 years old when he died in December 2020 as a result of a severe respiratory condition due to prolonged exposure to mold in the social home his family rented in Rochdale Burrow Wide Housing.  In the wake of his untimely death, our adherents have tenaciously and courageously fought to secure justice, not only for their son, but for all those who live in social housing.  The Deputy Prime Minister and I are deeply grateful to them for their passion and persistence.
