Childhood Vaccinations Committee House of Lords
00:01 - 01:55
Speaker 8
Good afternoon, and welcome to today's meeting, which is the first oral evidence session as part of the committee's inquiry into childhood rates in England. And I'd like to thank doctor Helen Stewart, Helen Donovan, and doctor Alexander Crevin who are attending. The first two witnesses are joining us in the room, and doctor Crevin is online. This session is open to the public, and it will be broadcast live, and it's subsequently accessible via the parliamentary website. We will be taking a verbatim transcript, of the evidence, and that will be published on the parliamentary website.
And a few days after this session, our witnesses will be sent a copy of the transcript so that you can check it for accuracy. So it'd be very helpful if you could advise us of any small corrections as quickly as possible after you receive that. And if after this evidence session any of the three of you wish to clarify or amplify any of the points made during your evidence or have anything additional that you think would be helpful to us, please do submit supplementary written evidence to us. So I do need to warn you that there may be divisions in the house this afternoon, and if that is the case, I will pause the recording and then we will resume again in fifteen minutes. So I think we're all ready to start with the questions.
And as usual, as chair, I will ask the first question. And the question is, why is childhood vaccination important and what impact does it have? And what are both the benefits and the costs of routine childhood vaccination programs in England? Perhaps, Helen, would you like to start and just introduce yourself briefly before you reply?

Thank you. So, yes, I'm Helen Donovan. I'm a registered nurse, with over forty years of experience, but over thirty years of experience in vaccination. Worked, sometimes, I think, for longer than I should have done in vaccination, but as a practice nurse, as a health visitor, immunization coordinator. I was at the Royal College of Nursing, and I'm also the chair of a charity now for self care.
