Public Services Committee House of Lords

20:07 - 20:28
Speaker 1
Okay.  Thanks very much.  Welcome to this meeting of the Public Services Committee.  It is our first hearing into police transcription, and I'm going to ask our witnesses to introduce themselves: just name, where you come from, very briefly what your job title is, and then we'll go straight to the first question.  Doctor Howarth, do you want to start with the introductions?
20:28 - 21:06
Speaker 2
Sure, thank you.  So, I'm a doctor.  Kate Howarth, I'm an academic researcher.  My main area of research has been investigative interviewing for the last 20 years.  And since 2018, I've been leading a project called For the Record, which specifically looks into issues around the production and use of police interview transcripts, particularly as evidence.

I do want to mention, for the record.  I was a practicing barrister, but that's obviously some time ago now, so I do draw on that experience, but I'm not here in that capacity at all.  I'm here as an academic and a linguist.  Thank you very much.  Doctor.

Speaker 3
Tomkinson.  Thank you very much.  So, my name is James Tomkinson. I'm a lecturer in sociolinguistics at the University of York.  I work on forensic linguistics and forensic speech science.  My background is in both of those areas.
