Intervenant 1
Welcome to this press conference following today's Health Council meeting.  With me, I have the Danish Minister for Health, Sufi Ilule, and Commissioner Oliver Baihely.  And they will both be ready to take your questions.  But first, I will give them both the floor for their statements.  So, Minister, the floor is yours.

Thank you very much.  Europe faces global uncertainty and complex health challenges.  In recent years, member states have been confronted with serious medicine shortages, and geopolitical tensions put us at risk of further disruptions in the supply of critical medicines.  Medicine shortages put patients' lives at risk and also place a significant burden on our healthcare system.  It is therefore more important than ever that the EU is capable of making the necessary decisions to protect our common interests.

Today, the EBSCO Council has shown that we can turn words into action. We have agreed on a general approach for the Critical Medicines Act.  The goal is to ensure that medicines are available when European patients need them by making Europe a more attractive market to produce medicines in, and by also setting a framework for common procurement of medicines, which will reduce the risk of shortages.  Reaching a general approach on the Critical Medicines Act has been one of our top priorities in health.  I would like to thank my colleagues in the council for their support and also their constructive approach.  Europe is stronger when we stand together.

We now rely on Cyprus to guide us through the trilogue and reach a final agreement with the European Parliament.  We wish them all the best in this endeavor.  They have our full support.  During lunch, we had an informal discussion about tobacco and nicotine.  And how can we work to better protect children and young people? We see increasing challenges with the growing use of tobacco and nicotine products, many of which actively target children and young people—products that pose a serious health risk.
