Constitution Committee House of Lords
00:05 - 00:05
Good morning,
00:05 - 01:41
Speaker 2
and welcome to this meeting of the House of Lords Constitution Committee. Today, we're holding a one off follow-up evidence session on the committee's 2024 report on the governance of the union consultation, cooperation, and legislative consent. We're delighted to be joined by the right honorable Nick Thomas Simmons, MP, minister for the constitution, by Kirsty McNeil, MP, parliamentary undersecretary of state for Scotland, and by Chris Flatt, director of the union and devolution directorate at the cabinet office. You're most welcome, and thank you very much for coming to our meeting this morning. As a matter of formality, I have to remind members to declare any interests relevant to today's meeting the first time they speak.
I declare that I have no relevant interests of my own to declare. So this is such a fascinating subject. We realize we have a a short time before us this morning, so we will try to keep our our questions and answers brief because this is a a really fascinating subject on which we could all, discuss for many hours. But may I begin, minister, by asking you the straight and simple question by asking you the straight and simple question that we have had devolution in practice now for some quarter of a century. Has it been a success?
01:42 - 02:07
Speaker 7
Well, I I guess, you know, when I ask for short answers, Damon, I think the answer would be, yes. I will expand on that in just a moment. But firstly, just to thank you for the opportunity, to appear before your committee. I'm very sorry to be, it seems, very narrowly missing lord, Strathclyde. By a matter of hours, seems, but I'm sure I'll the opportunity to appear, before this committee again with him as the, chair.
