Order.  Before I call the member in charge, there are 21 people down to speak, which basically means two to two and a half minutes for each speech.  There are also quite a lot of people in this room who are intervening.  I am letting the lead member know this in order to get an idea of when he might finish, but no longer than 20 minutes, I would suggest.  Thank you.

I call the member in charge.

Speaker 2
Ian Burn.  Thank you, Chair.  It's an honor to assist you with your chasing.  Today, I'm here to speak on the urgent need for the statutory duty of candour and the full implementation of the Hillsborough law, and to oppose those forces who want to fight against this change.  Chair, the state has historically taken a defensive position to protect its own interests.

From the Peterloo Massacre, Bloody Sunday, Hillsborough, the Post Office scandal, Grenfell, the contaminated blood scandal, and nuclear test veterans to name a few.  The list of states covered up is long, exhausting, and also shameful.  But so many families are denied truth and justice because of the current system, which enables cover-ups.  How and why has a system been left in place that continually enables the establishment to invade truth, accountability, and justice for those wronged?  That is a question this place and this country should think about long and hard.
