Numeracy for Life Committee House of Lords
00:02 - 00:33
Speaker 10
Welcome to this session for Numeracy for Life inquiry and welcome to our witnesses today. Thank you very much for getting here in what are pretty difficult conditions on public transport. So just to open the batting, if each of you could just do a 30-second summary of your areas of interest so that the committee know where you have your expertise. So let's start with Dr. Martin.
00:33 - 01:31
Speaker 22
Yes, I'm David Martin, in retirement a volunteer with the U3A as the national subject advisor for them. So that's the member-led, member-run peer learning organisation that has 400,000 members clustered around a thousand local independently run U3As. Briefly about my background, after degree and doctorate in mathematics specialising in computer-based mathematical models of molecules, I engaged in postdoctoral research in theoretical chemistry, became qualified as a teacher, taught computer science and mathematics, becoming an advanced practitioner and a teacher trainer of adult numeracy subject specialists. I've sat on various maths advisory committees, been chair of the National Association for Numeracy and Mathematics in Colleges and honorary secretary of the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK.
01:31 - 01:34
Speaker 1
Thank you. Professor Atkinson.
01:34 - 02:12
Speaker 16
Good morning everybody and thank you very much for the invitation to be here. I am a professor of practice in financial literacy and wellbeing at CHASM, a research centre in the University of Birmingham. CHASM provides robust evidence, research-based evidence for a fairer and more financially inclusive society. I have been an academic for the last four years, hence I'm a practice, a professor of practice I should say, and prior to that I was at the OECD where latterly I was head of financial education within the Directorate for Financial Affairs.
