Thank you very much, Mr. Turner. It's a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship and in an environment with such great air conditioning, if I may say so. I am committed to proportional representation. I think it would change the political culture. I don't see how first-past-the-post and the point scoring inherent within it lifts Britain out of the doom loop it is in.

These words could have been spoken by any Liberal Democrat member in this room or beyond, but they weren't. This is a direct quote from the member believed to be Prime Minister-elect, Andy Burnham. Now, not only does this quote highlight the need for proportional representation, it also underscores the limitations of first-past-the-post, which the new member for Wakefield identifies as causing political instability. The Liberal Democrats and the Liberal Party before them have called for fair votes for a century, and I am delighted that this advocacy for change has a new voice in this Parliament, the newly elected member for Wakefield. Now, this should not be a controversial view amongst his colleagues either.
