I now ask the cameras to be switched on. We are now in public session. The first item on our agenda are draft conclusions on sport tourism as a contributor to sustainable development. This is the first time that the Council prepared a set of conclusions dedicated specifically to the interconnectedness of sport and tourism. The topic is very timely.
Millions of Europeans travel because of sport, to participate or to watch, and each of those trips carries economic and social potential together with an environmental footprint. Sustainable sport tourism aims to combine sport tourism activities with environmental protection and climate objectives while providing long-term value for both visitors and hosting communities. Our draft conclusions emphasize the possibilities of an alternative to certain mass tourism models. They put sustainability at the center as a guiding principle, from promoting active mobility to organizing major sporting competitions. In addition, sport tourism has to start from local communities and pay off.
It has the potential to provide quality jobs and strengthen community identity and local ownership. Finally, a coordinated and cross-sectoral approach is needed at all levels to bring together private and public sectors and sports movement in the pursuit of a common goal: to develop sustainable sport tourism services and projects. I'm glad that you can all support the text of the draft conclusions that we are about to approve. I would like to thank you all for your constructive contributions during the discussions. Before proceeding with the formal approval, I would like to give the floor to Commissioner Mihailov.
