COMMITTEE Parlement européen
04:38 - 07:08
Intervenant 2
OK, ladies and gentlemen, we will start the meeting. Welcome to the full and substitute members of SANT and DEVE. Interpreters for the following languages are present: German, English, French, Italian, Danish, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Czech, Lithuanian, Hungarian, Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian, and Croatian. Can we adopt the agenda?
No objections, we have done that. And there are no announcements, so I will go directly into the third item: the Ebola virus outbreak in Central Africa.
It is an exchange of views with the WHO and the European Commission. So, very welcome here. And dear colleagues, welcome to this joint meeting. Together with the colleagues of the Committee of Development and the Vice-Chair MEP Isabelle Lovin, we will chair this meeting together. In mid-May 2026, an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus was reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
On the 17th of May 2026, the World Health Organization determined that the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. This means that the outbreak poses a serious, unusual, cross-border risk that requires coordinated international action. Particularly worrying is the fact that this outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatment, although several candidate products are promising enough to warrant prioritization for evaluation in clinical trials. Therefore, the outbreak response must maintain primary healthcare and essential services and strengthen long-term health system resilience.
